fashionable feature :: style guide #1

So I just signed up for modepass – it’s pretty darn cool. If you don’t already have an account, you should definitely register! And be sure to add me as a friend when you do. You can find me at :: http://modepass.com/fashionnerd (my user name is, of course, fashionnerd). I re-wrote my advice from my previous post on achieving a menswear inspired look and posted it as an article on modepass; check it out and vote for it on my modepass profile. I also decided to re-post it here because, well, I’m kind of proud of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve decided to make a new weekly feature post called “Style Guides”, where we’ll explore different trends and discuss how to construct them. Consider this the first installment! I hope you find it helpful… if you have any input (am I wrong somewhere? something you’d like to add? a question? anything!) please feel free to comment! In fact,ย  any feedback you have for me would be greatly appreciated. This is my first detailed style guide – I want to make sure it’s complete and make sure that my future guides are up to par! I will also post the week’s Style Guide in a separate page (found in the sidebar under “my closet”), so you can find it easily if you miss it. Style Guides will be posted every week, probably on Sundays.

Here goes. Enjoy, and let me know what you think when you’re done ๐Ÿ™‚

fashion_nerdom style guide :: issue 1
inspired by menswear, styled for a woman

Nude wedges and a light colored blazer are a girlโ€™s best friends for summer. Straw hats, loose blouses and tailored shorts are also among my new inner circle of lovelies.

Funny-Face

The menswear look is definitely my favorite; itโ€™s loose and flowy and comfy, but still very chic and sexy. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to achieve and looks great on everyone. There are some basic guidelines to follow when attempting this style; but remember – they are guidelines, not rules. They may not work for everyone, and everyone may not agree on how I feel about certain things. The best thing to do is to take this information as advice and work your way up from there. Experiment, play around, and find out what works for you and your body and what you’re comfortable in. Nothing in fashion is ever set in stone!

How To Get There

(in a hurry? check the bottom of this post for the abbreviated version)

the top half
Blazers provide a menswear inspired look in and of themselves, so if youโ€™re just dipping your toes and youโ€™re not sure you want to go all the way, a blazer + menโ€™s watch are your go-to pieces. I would definitely recommend that you pick a blazer that has some structure to it and is a little over-sized (think boyfriend fit). Strong shoulders are also very in right now – I like small shoulder pads in blazers. For summer and spring, choose a blazer in a light color, like white, peach, light pink, beige, etc. For fall and winter, slip into something a little darker, like black, charcoal, navy, etc.Pink-Blazer-Lavender-Tunic-Taupe-Shortsgo all the way
For those of us who prefer to swim in the deep end, trousers or tailored shorts (extra points for pleats) and a fedora will fill in the rest of the blanks. Remember, though, the look should be inspired by menswear, not make you look like a man. In spring and summer, keep it feminine with light colors throughout the ensemble (think light neutrals & pastels), pretty jewelry (I like gold touches and pearls with this color scheme), and sweet accents (like a straw fedora, especially one adorned with flowers, and a cute-but-subtle purse). A delicate, ladylike blouse balances out the other menswear style pieces, and nude wedges are the perfect shoe for this look โ€“ sky high wedges scream โ€œIโ€™m a womanโ€ without distracting from the rest of the look, and when worn in the nude make your legs seem impossibly long. Wedges also keep things from looking too businessy (I’d advise avoiding pumps for this reason). In the fall & winter, swap the nude colors for darker ones to keep with the season, but follow the rest of the rules for keeping things ladylike.

Nude-Wedgesadd ons

Regardless of your tactics for achieving this look, a men’s watch is a must. It may truly be the key piece for this particular style. Pile on some pearl necklaces, bangles and loads of cocktail rings to complete your accessorizing. Don’t overdo it – if you jingle when you move, take off a few items of jewelry before you leave the house. In the fall & winter (or if you simply want an edgier look), when you’re wearing darker colors, you may want to trade the pearls and gold for chains and studs in pewter and silver, depending on the rest of your ensemble.

Accessories

Choose a bag in that meshes well with the rest of your clothes. To many people view the purse as outside the outfit; on the contrary, especially when going for a menswear look, the purse is an integral part of your ensemble. A bag that clashes in any way (wrong colors, style, etc) can seriously break an outfit, while a bag that fits in seamlessly can make for an incredible ensemble. Small purses with long shoulder straps and clutches are very stylish right now, but the larger bags haven’t completely migrated off the fashion scene. Keep in mind though that larger bags tend to be more sensible for day time use, and small purses and clutches are more chic choices for evening outings.

Purse-&-Shoes

Hats are the perfect way to top off a menswear look; my favorite are fedoras. Hats can completely transform an outfit – into something amazing or something hideous. They can be incredibly tricky to style, as hats don’t flatter everyone universally. Finding the perfect one for you and your outfit may take some work, but it will be well worth the effort when you find it. Some general guidelines for your hat hunting mission:

  • If you’re using a spring/summer palette of light neutrals and pastels, try a straw fedora in a natural or cream shade.
  • Embellishments such as ribbons, flowers or bows can add a uniquely feminine twist to a traditionally male accessory.
  • In the colder months of fall and winter, when wearing darker colors, leave straw hats on the hook. Choose a fedora with a fun print, like pin stripes, leopard print, zebra print, etc.
  • If the rest of your outfit ventures closer to the darker end of the color spectrum, feel free to add a pop of color with your hat – just make sure that it doesn’t clash with your outfit or your hair. It sits right on top of your head, so if it clashes with your hair it will be hideously apparent. Be wary of this if you choose a funky color.
  • Try to choose a hat that is the same/is a similar color as one in the lower portion of your outfit. This will pull the look together; otherwise, it can look a bit random and out of place.

Further Notes

alterations
If you don’t have a blazer, you can instead opt for an oversized button down – add a tie for extra credit. Ties a little too much for you? Try a fun and unexpected twist on the idea, like a big bow (kinda like a bow tie, only better). If you don’t have one pre-made, DIY by wrapping a large ribbon under your collar as you would a tie, and tying it in a bow.

If you’re not comfortable in heels, or if they’re simply not practical for your day, switch to ballet flats (ones with bows or jewels will have the same effect as the wedges, but make sure they follow the same color scheme as the rest of your clothing). Even better, slip on some jazz oxford flats, like these from ThreadSence.com.

things to avoid
Don’t mix all three major players – blazer, oversized button down & tailored pants – as that could end up overpowering your womanly physique. Keep one or two items femme and play around with loose, boyfriend fits for the rest to create the perfect feminine menswear look. Some possible combos :: blazer + button down + skinny jeans; blazer + button down + leggings; blazer + ladylike blouse + tailored shorts; blazer + graphic tee + trousers… The possibilities are endless. Play around. Find what you like and work it.

empirical evidence
I was able to purchase an entire menswear styled look from Forever 21 for about $110… It is absolutely my favorite outfit. You can see it in the photo attached to this article, or in my previous blog entry :: femme it up. I constructed the look using a peachy-pink blazer from their Love21 line ($27.80), a lavender-gray sleeveless tunic ($17.80, sale $8.99), taupe tailored shorts w/pleats ($17.80), nude buckle wedges (sale, $14.99), a straw fedora w/cream silk flowers ($12.80), a cloth floral bangle (sale, $1.00) & a gold & turquoise ring ($3.00). I completed it with a 3-layer necklace (gold chain, cream ribbon & pearls adorned w/a flower of cream ribbon), gold hoop earrings with gold & cream beading, and some other cocktails rings that I acquired on a different shopping trip. Everything except for two of the rings was from Forever 21.

so, to recap

  • A men’s style watch is the key accessory for achieving a menswear style look.
  • Structured, over sized blazers with small shoulder pads are a great way to add a menswear touch, without going all the way.
  • Add trousers or tailored shorts to your blazer for the full effect. Pleating on these items make them even better.
  • Let them know you’re a woman with a lady like blouse, jewelry & super tall wedges.
  • Think light neutrals & pastels in spring and summer; blacks, grays, dark browns & other dark colors for fall & winter.
  • Gold & pearls with ribbons & bows in spring & summer; studs & chains in pewter & silver for fall & winter.
  • Cocktails rings are a must.
  • Repeat after me :: My purse is an extension of my outfit.
  • Perfect fedora = outfit perfection
  • Avoid overkill; too much of any one thing (menswear pieces, bangles, cocktail rings, etc) will overpower the look.
  • Play around. Have fun. Experiment.

True fashion is learning to enjoy yourself and what you’re wearing, finding a look you love and wearing with with confidence.
Style is the art of self-creation.

My new outfit is fantastic… I am seriously in love with it. The bottom photo is my favorite, even though I’m making a funny face. I was trying to think of a new pose when Travis decided to snap a picture without warning me, and surprisingly it turned out really cute. As you can see, basically everything, except a couple rings, is from Forever 21… Excluding the rings not from Forever 21, the necklace & earrings (which I got from F21 on a different shopping trip) this outfit cost $112 – which is actually pretty damn good considering how much I got and how awesome it is. I did pick up a lovely necklace for just $2 that would match this outfit perfectly, but I don’t think I have any earrings that would really match it:

Pink-&-Cream-Wood-Bead-NecklaceAny thoughts on the matter?

I went to the mall again yesterday, with my little-sister-in-law, and picked up an incredibly comfy black floral sweatshirt for $7.99. I’ve already decided what I’m wearing with it, I just need a reason to put it on.There was also a sheer high-neck black blouse with ruffles that I really wanted for $4.99… but I would have also had to get a lacy black bra to go with it, and Travis will shoot me if I spend any more money. I bought her a gorgeous black dress to wear to her sister’s graduation, and also a purple wide belt that she’s been wanting for ages. She said I’m her favorite sister ๐Ÿ˜€ We also checked out a local thrift shop, where I picked up a new jewelry box for just $8:

Jewelry-Box

Jewelry-Box

The lock on it is broken, but everything else works just fine and it’s absolutely perfect. Would you believe this is not even close to all of my jewelry? There is a coffee table in my bedroom that is literally a shrine to jewelry and the boxes that contain them. I have a total of four wooden jewelry boxes (including this new one), a small painted one, two pop-top plastic totes (you can see the edges of them on the left of the photo), and a stack of three RubberMaid drawers – all completely full of jewelry. I spent at least two hours organizing my jewelry last night, and I’m only about halfway done. If there is such a thing as too much jewelry, I may have attained it…

Travis decided yesterday to postpone our date (something with his stupid video game…. whatever), and he wants to go tonight but I don’t really feel like doing much of anything today. My nose is killing me – I’m having all kinds of trouble with my sinuses since we move down here – and I’m really, really tired. I think I would rather go tomorrow. But I do love me some Robert Downey Jr…….

The ThreadSence winner announcement is forthcoming. It will be up by the end of the night… So sorry for the delay. My life has been crazy this week. But I do have some really awesome stuff planned for my blog over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

Summertime does not mean you must leave layering behind; it simply means you must adjust your tactics! I paired this loose, light knit vest with a long sleeved thin tee – the perfect combo for this time of year, when it’s not quite hot but not quite cold. Later in the summer, when things really start to heat up and it’s too hot for sleeves, I will trade in this tee for a short sleeve version in a fun color, and swap the long jeans for some cute distressed denim shorts. A knit vest such as this allows you to enjoy the layered look without boiling yourself to death in the summer heat.

A wide belt cinched around your middle provides a figure when wearing a loose outer layer. You can wear the belt over the vest to keep things close together, or underneath it, allowing the vest to hang free while still showing off those gorgeous curves. Keep it simple with a solid color that matches your vest, jazz things up with something sequined or sparkly, or add a little bad girl to the ensemble with studsย  or chains. Whatever style of belt you choose, try to keep the main color of the belt the same as your vest. IMO, this pulls the look together nicely – especially if this matches your shoes/bag. Go wild with your shirt, and keep everything else related for a polished but fun look.

Things seem to finally be leveling out for me, and I promise I will be updating regularly again from this point forward. I’m considering setting a specific time frame every day that’s completely devoted to this blog. Honestly, I don’t see how that would be too difficult, considering that I don’t really do much of anything most days.

I have been getting out a lot more the last few days. I went to the mall today! I didn’t even make it out of Forever 21 though… What can I say??? I LOVE that store. I bought an entire new outfit for about $100! I really shouldn’t have spent so much, but considering what I got and how much I love it, I don’t regret it too much. I will definitely post pictures tomorrow night! Travis is taking me on a date and I’m going to wear my awesome new outfit for it ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow, Travis is taking me to see Iron Man 2, and we’re going to the mall again. I went by myself today, it was nice to get out and have some “me” time. I’m actually really glad I got to go by myself today. He normally loathes going to the mall, but I am insisting that he buys new clothes now that we have some money… He only has one pair of jeans that doesn’t have holes in the knees, and he could definitely use a few more shirts. So I’m dragging him down there tomorrow afternoon, and I plan to explore the rest of the mall as well.

I might be visiting home next week, probably from the 1st to the 5th. If I end up going, posting will prolly be sporadic again. I want to go, to see my family… but it would be really nice to have the house to ourselves for the week. I miss my daddy, but I also miss living on my own. If it were only for a couple of days I would probably go, but it’s almost the entire week – we would be staying at Travis’s mom’s house, without my laptop and without my car, and all of my friends live at least an hour away. I think I would be bored stiff. It could give me a chance to catch up on my reading, but I would also have zero privacy. Whereas, if we stay here, we’d have the house all to ourselves for five days…. I dunno. I hate making decisions.

Again, I’m sorry for the inconsistency in my posting lately. I want you all to know that I do read and very much appreciate every comment left here, even if I don’t answer you immediately. And I haven’t forgotten about the giveaway – I will post the winner tomorrow! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m even gonna be super nice and let you enter until noon PST tomorrow (Thursday, May 27th). I’ll post the winner sometime after that!

it’s been a long week – and it’s only tuesday

Okay, so I really fail at updating my blog over the last week. Things have been crazy. Sorry blog and blog friends ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Travis and I had a hunormous fight the other night that very nearly ended in me walking the 600 miles home. It was a bad one. And while I understand his point of view, the argument only happened due to his inability to understand my point of view, despite how many times I have explained myself. And it’s really starting to piss me off. He has a tendency to be extremely inconsiderate and insensitive sometimes over certain issues and it causes a lot of stress for our relationship. There are only two things we ever argue about: sex and money. UGH – Men! But, we’ve worked it out (for the time being, at least), and both agreed to work on our parts of the deal. I think we can fix it… we just have to try a little harder than we have been.

So then, Vince (my cat) went missing for an entire day – I worry entirely too much about my cats. A couple hours I could handle, but he went missing about noon and wasn’t home by midnight when I went to bed. I was skeered, to say the least. Travis went out to check the door at about 4:30 a.m. and found him – in the garage, that we’d torn apart and checked 4 times already. Damn cat.

And then my mom told me she can’t hold up her end of the financial arrangement we made with her this month, which put us in a tight spot for our end of the month obligations. We did get Travis’s 401k check today (thank God), but all of the banks wanted to hold it for at least 5 days, and we have something we must pay on Friday, so we had to pay $80 just to cash the damn thing.

I did get to do a little shopping today though, and I will finally be able to organize my clothes, set up my closet and get my bedroom together. Plus, we’re going to the mall tomorrow – yay!!!

We went to Wal-Mart to obtain some caffeine, and I decided to check the clearance section again, just for kicks and giggles, and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been desperately searching for a denim button up, and I snagged a Miley Cyrus destroyed denim shirt for $7!!! I also picked up an L.E.I. yellow & brown & white plaid button up shirt dress for $7. How sweet is that? ๐Ÿ™‚ There was a pair of shorts I strongly considered getting… They were white with a floral pattern. They came in two colors: blue or red, and both had a little yellow mixed throughout them. They were only $5… I’m going to the mall tomorrow, and if I don’t find something I like better, I might go back for them. I’m not sure. We’ll see.

But I am super excited about the denim shirt ๐Ÿ˜€

I do have some outfit photos to share, so I will be back with those either later tonight or tomorrow sometime. I finally got my sleeping schedule fixed, so I function mostly during the day now. Hopefully I can maintain this trend!

In the meantime though, I have a question. Remember the camo pants I wore in this outfit:
White button up & camo pants

Well, that day was actually the first day I’d worn those pants in, well, years. They’re not skinnies, so they’re kind of a pain in the ass to wear with boots, but they are really cute in this outfit. I’m considering cutting them off into shorts, and I think I would wear them a lot more often that way. Plus, that way I get more wear out of them in the summer while the military/desert trend is still hot. What do you kids think?

This is the outfit I wore on Thursday. I have a couple ideas for remixing it, and I plan to try them out soon. One plan involves a dark olive green cardigan instead of the vest, and possibly switching the khaki shorts out for some similarly colored pants. This remix idea would definitely be more cool-weather friendly, which seems to be more appropriate at the moment. I was excited to move to California because it was supposed to be warm here; so far we’ve only had a handful of days I could stand to wear shorts outside. I’m very disappointed in CA weather! At least it’s raining in Utah… I miss the rain, desperately. I was not made to live in a desert. I need something green. I think I’d like to move to Washington or Oregon sometime soon.

I am absolutely in love with these shoes and this vest… The vest is all over sized and comfy and soft and lovely, but lightweight enough to layer with it in the summer. I have a similar one in black that I adore – it looks amazing thrown over something white or gray. I’m loving vests right now, and I plan to pick up a few fitted ones very soon.

There is something seriously wrong with me. I went to sleep at about 5:00 a.m. Friday morning… and didn’t wake up until 1:00 a.m. on Saturday – 20 hours later. I was up for a few hours, then went back to sleep about 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 Saturday night! It’s now about 5:00 a.m. Sunday, and the really sad thing is, I feel like I could lay down and go back to sleep. I’m afraid that if I do go back to sleep, I’ll sleep through an entire day again… and that would really make John angry. So, I’m going to stay up, and tomorrow evening I’m going to be in bed by 10:00 p.m., at the absolute latest.

It may sound cheesy, but I have written a “Plan of Action” for myself for the next week. It includes a list of all the things I need to accomplish and the goals I have for myself. I’m going to keep track by writing myself a daily to do list and recording my progress and thoughts in my journal. Suzanne suggested something similar a few weeks ago, and I think that having goals for my day, and a way to see my productivity at the end of the day, will encourage me to get myself moving and get things done. Hopefully, it will also help to pull me out of my funk. I did go for a jog Thursday morning, and it made me feel tons better. I enjoy being physically active, it’s just a matter of motivating myself to get away from my computer. If it’s decently warm in the morning, I’m going to go for another jog. If not, I’m at least going to work out on the weights in the garage.

John has started referring to my cats as “Trail Mix”, because they follow me everywhere. And this is not a new phenomenon – they did it back in Salt Lake, too. My little sister says they’re only friendly when I’m around. People can say what they want about cats, but Vince and Lily definitely know who they belong to.

Britain girl

So tired. Feels like I haven’t slept in ages.

Didn’t get as much done on my blog as I wanted to today, but I did get other stuff done, which is important too. I somehow managed to spend three hours getting myself put together this morning. Don’t ask me how that happened… I honestly have no idea. This is what I wore while I wasted my morning away:

It was really cute and comfy, and I almost ended up in this for the entire day, but I put together an outfit Friday that I have been dying to try out, so I changed.
(see bottom of post for all outfit info)

Blazer & Brit Tee

Earrings, Blazer & Brit Tee

I managed to drag Travis away from LoL and his computer long enough to go down to a nearby park and wander around in the fading sunlight, capturing photos of my outfit. Today I decided to wear my British flag t-shirt under my charcoal blazer with my denim shorts, black pumps, red clutch and aviator sunglasses. Perfect outfit for playing at the park. Well, except for the pumps, anyway. They were kind of a bitch to walk in across the grass. The pumps are vintage but in fantastic condition, the label inside says “Oh Deer…” and the bottoms are bright red – it was love at first sight with these shoes, especially because they were only $5. Who could turn down these shoes at that price??? They are one of the few vintage pieces I own (so far), but I fully intend to change that very soon.

Blazer & Brit Tee

Blazer & Brit Tee

Blazer & Brit Tee

I *love* this red clutch. It may very well be the nicest purse I own, and I instantly feel chic whenever I add it to an outfit.

John (father in law) called me “Britain Girl” all day today because of my shirt (which I snagged on clearance for $1… seriously. how awesome is that????). I seriously think this may have just become my FAVORITE outfit in my entire wardrobe. This was the first time I’ve worn the blazer – I’ve had it since last fall but I’ve been having a serious style blockage whenever I pull it out of the wardrobe. I was considering getting rid of it, but something finally clicked the other day, I put this together and – voila! The perfect summer outfit. I think part of the issue was that the sleeves of the blazer are actually long. I rolled them up to give it a more casual look. The black & silver printed scarf + the British flag t-shirt = my version of mixing prints. Surprisingly, my first adventure with print mixing seems to have turned out pretty well.

Clutch, bracelet & watch

I’m really loving the men’s watch look right now. I’ve been wanting a man style watch for a while now, and my mom got Travis one for his birthday last August. He hasn’t been able to use it yet, because it’s just a tiny bit too big. He really needs to take it down to the mall and get a link or two taken out of it. It’s a bit too big for me, too, but I found out today that it will at least stay on my wrist. So, I’ve stolen it and I’m wearing it till he takes it down to get it adjusted. Plus, my super awesome bangle watch from Bebe is broken. I need to find the receipt and send it in for repair – it has a one year warranty on it, and I just got it a couple months ago. I found the receipt right before we moved… but then we moved.

Vintage Black Pumps

Blazer & Brit Tee

I didn’t do a whole lot today – went to the store, explored the nearby park, and wandered around home, but it’s more than I’ve done in ages, physically speaking, and I feel pretty good about it. In fact, today was absolutely the best day I have had since moving to California three weeks ago. It’s crazy how the perfect outfit can completely transform your outlook on your day and your attitude towards the things you need to do. Even something as simple as running errands can feel glamorous in the right pair of shoes. I used to feel silly wearing high heels outside of work and clubbing, especially because I am kinda tall, but you know what? I finally decided to dress for me, and not for what other people want me to look like – and I feel so liberated. So much more free about my fashion choices. It’s definitely easier to get dressed in the morning, and if I want to wear heels, I wear them, and I don’t give a damn what other people think. I wear what I like, what I think looks good and what I’m comfortable in.

While I was at Wal-Mart today, I happened into the clearance section of the clothing and came upon a teal cropped Miley Cyrus jacket for $5!!! I’m so glad I finally had some money. I was able to get it, and while we don’t have a whole lot of money left, Travis’s 401k should be coming in soon. I already have an outfit planned for tomorrow, so I’m thinking I’ll wear my new jacket on Tuesday – though I may change my mind, it really depends on the weather. I definitely plan to continue getting out of the house over the next few days, so expect more photos with grass and trees instead of bathroom counters.

I honestly can’t believe I’m still awake. I actually fell asleep in my chair a little while ago, Travis woke me up and I almost went to bed then, but I wanted to finish this post. So here I am, an hour later, finally getting done. I am too tired to keep doing this to myself. I started re-arranging my blog today, but I will finish the updates and make over tomorrow. I’m going to bed now!

Do me a favor? Stop by my Chictopia & my Mode Republic and vote for the new outfits I’ve posted? Pretty please with a cherry on top? ๐Ÿ™‚

vegas adventure

Despite not having a lot of money, Vegas was a lot of fun. We went to five different casinos, and we somehow managed to lose money at all of them. We definitely hit a string of bad luck last night! We decided we would only gamble $20 of our money, and our luck was so bad that we lost it within the first hour at our first casino, Whiskey Pete’s. This was incredibly frustrating because when we left Whiskey Pete’s, it was only 11pm AND it’s actually 40 miles outside of Vegas. However, when we arrived at our first Vegas proper casino, the New York New York, John and Shantel bought us an amazing strawberry daiquiri from the bar Coyote Ugly and gave us another $20 (have I ever mentioned how much I love them???). After we got our drinks, we walked across the bridge over the strip to the MGM Grand and gambled most of our $20 away there. We actually almost won all of our money back – we hit $36 on a machine and I jokingly said that we should quit for the night. I really wish we would have, because that was the highest we got all night.

When we walked into the MGM Grand, we went past the entrance for Studio 54. If Travis had had his damn ID, I probably would have skipped the gambling and gone in there. He lost his license a couple of weeks ago and only has his old, expired one that has holes punched in it. Blast! I am definitely going next time we’re in Vegas, though – with or without him.

Jen & Travis

Me & the most amazingest guy in the world (Travis... duh)

Losing all of that money made me crave food in a bad way. I wasn’t hungry, I just wanted comfort food. I’ve never been a stress eater until recently, when I gave up another habit I used as anxiety control. So, we were about to call it quits and get some food (me some clam chowder and Travis a pretzel) when John and Shantel decided it was time to move on to the next casino.

Vegas Style Tip :: Wear something that will still be flattering if you get bloated from too much alcohol and junk food.

After stopping for gas (John came out with a Snickers candy bar for me and completely made my night), we drove off the Strip to a more Wendover-like casino called the Texas Station. It was nowhere near as crowded as the casinos on the Strip – in fact, it was pretty empty. I was definitely okay with that though, because at this point in the night I was pretty tired. I hadn’t slept much the night before, so it was kind of nice to get away from the crowds, the noise, the dirt and the constant fear that someone was going to make off with my purse.

Purse :: Bebe

In fact, I really didn’t want to carry my purse for most of the night for just that reason – it’s kind of a big target. I had meant to grab my tiny black clutch, but we were in such a hurry to leave that it completely slipped my mind. Instead, I actually used my leopard print wallet case as a clutch for most of the evening. Travis was kind enough to put my lipstick and eyeliner in his pocket, so the wallet was perfect – small enough that it wasn’t conspicuous, carried it so it couldn’t be pick-pocketed, and held in my lap when sitting so no one could grab it, but big enough to hold what I needed to have with me.

Vegas style tip :: Take a bag/wallet that you can keep your hands/eyes on at all times; only use your pockets if they’re deep, and shove your money & ID as far into the pocket as possible.

When we arrived at Texas Station, we had planned to go immediately in search of that comfort food, but John was kind enough to give us another $10 so we could play a bit more. We lost it, put in another $5, got it back, and decided we were done. Honestly, I’m not much a fan of gambling. It’s more fun when you’re drinking (and winning), and the daiquiri was the only drink I had last night.

The Strip has some pretty swanky casinos, but Texas Station is awesome – they have movie theaters and a pretty decent sized food court. It was 3am though, and the only restaurant open was Fatburger. I love me some french fries, but I very rarely eat burgers… and never at a fast food joint. However, for some reason last night I was craving one like none other. Even more strange was the fact that I wanted stuff on my burger. Normally I get a slice of beef and a bun, cheese if I’m feeling adventurous. But last night, I got cheese, mayo, lettuce and onions. I NEVER eat onions. There was definitely something wrong with me last night.

Small (but amazing) burger from FatBurger

I did order the smallest burger on the menu, 2.5oz, but it definitely did not disappoint me. It was amazing. In fact, next time I’m in Vegas I may have to wander over to Texas Station just for FatBurger. Seriously the BEST burger I have ever had. And the fries??? OMG… the fries. They give you a choice of steak or skinny; we ordered steak but were lucky enough to get some of both. The only thing that could possibly have made them better would have been fry sauce. (for the non-Utahns out there, fry sauce is a mixture of ketchup and mayo for french fries). When we were done eating, we talked and laughed, and I entertained myself by taking photos of everything in sight.

Vegas Style Tip :: Carry a purse size hand sanitizer with you at all times. After just an hour of gambling, I could feel the layers of dirt and grime and disgustingness covering my hands.

Textured Tights & Ballet Flats

Tights :: F21; Ballet flats :: Charlotte Russe

The first half of the night I wore my second favorite pair of heels, my black buckle ankle boots. I thought Travis got them in the very first photo of me, but apparently not. I will get a picture of them up asap. After walking between casinos and around the machines for a few hours though, my feet started to swell and really hurt. I’m definitely glad I brought my ballet flats with me… I seriously might have died otherwise!

Vegas style tip :: If you’re wearing heels, make sure to bring a pair of flats with you to the casinos. Keep them in your car, in your purse, or make your husband put them in his back pocket, but bring them!!! Unless you are accustomed to walking miles on hard floors and pavement and standing for hours in them, bring your flats as a back up.

Texas Station was meant to be our last stop for the night. John and Shantel got done gambling a while after we got done eating. We piled into the car and started towards home on I-15, and I started to doze off in the car. When we reached the outskirts of Vegas, John decided to stop at the South Point casino to use the restroom. On his way out, John and Shantel got distracted by a machine, so Travis and I contented ourselves by playing video Black Jack (we won 29 cents) until they finally decided it was time to go – at 5:45 in the a.m.

Vegas style tip :: No matter how cute they are, don’t wear extremely heavy earrings. They will start to hurt after an hour or two.

Despite my normal sleep schedule, I was incredibly exhausted at this point; despite how tired I was, I felt strangely restless and didn’t get to sleep until we were nearly home anyway. When we arrived home, at about 9am, I went straight to bed but still couldn’t get to sleep for some time… and when I did I slept until 6pm. There is definitely something wrong with my sleeping patterns. I decided to give regulating them one more shot, and I stayed up all night last night. It’s about 7am and I’m fighting the urge to crawl into bed. I still have that restless feeling, so I’m not sure that I could sleep even if I tried. I’m strongly considering a caffeine run when I’m done with this post.

Jennifer

Hey, it's me!

I’m still working on those updates I mentioned in my previous post; they will surface throughout the day today. When I’m done, I will write a post detailing the changes. I’m really excited about it! I’m strongly considering moving this blog over to Blogger. I definitely prefer the Word Press interface, but (from what I can tell) Blogger gives me greater freedom with the template and design of my blog, as well as additional tools to help me promote it. BUT… I’ve already done a lot of promoting with this blog and this address. I don’t know what to do! I know that unless Word Press releases their death grip on the blog templates soon, I will eventually have to move over. But I really do love this interface.

Argh. What do you guys think?
