my dream life & its wardrobe

Recently, a new friend of mine (Cafe Fashionista) posted a “what if…” post, describing what she would do with her life if she had no responsibilities and could do whatever she wanted, every single day, and invited her readers to do the same. The result, for me at least, was a lovely fantasy that I enjoyed so much I want to share it with you, and I hope, desperately, that one day I can turn it into a reality.

If I could do whatever I wanted every single day, I would go everywhere. I would wear tights, slouchy boots and a loose tunic top or shirt dress, belted at the waist, and carry a big boho bag filled with a camera, good books, treats, spiffy pens and an incredible leather journal.

If my life were mine, to do with as I please, I would wander the beach, stopping occasionally to read or to write; the next day I would explore the city and spend the afternoon sitting outside at a coffee shop, writing about all of the different people who pass by and imagining what their lives are like; I would go deep inside a mountain cave, touching the rocks and writing about what they must be thinking of the crazy human who’s intruded on their home; visit an ancient forest, where I would write about the trees and imagine what they must have seen in their hundreds of years of life.

If my life were mine, I would write, and imagine, and explore, and re-discover the wonder that is the world around us.

What I wouldn’t give to be able to do that…

My daily wear would consist of…

ThreadSence wish list

Fashion Nerd Giveaways

This is how completely indecisive I am, especially when it comes to buying clothes. I frequently spend hours in stores, anguishing over what to buy. You remember the $25 gift certificate I won from Delightfully Tacky? Well, I was able to narrow my ThreadSence wishlist down to exactly 13 items. Yeah, I know, I’m pathetic. BUT, I do plan to buy two items. They have free shipping on orders over $50, and I’m already halfway there with the gift certificate (checked the offer and it doesn’t say they don’t count), so I figure, why not???

SO, I am in desperate need of your help!!! Which item(s) should I purchase????? Please, please, PLEASE leave me a comment or somehow drop me a line letting me know what you think I should get. I’ve included the link with each item in case you want to go to it’s page for more details about it. I seriously fear that I may remain frozen in indecision if I don’t get some help!

BONUS :: I am even going to give you gals some incentive (read: I’m going to bribe you for it) – provided I get a minimum of 5 responses to this post, I am going to turn this into my own little ThreadSence giveaway! To keep things interesting, I’m not going to tell you what it is right off the bat – I will tell you it’s (probably) from the jewelry category, and the more entries there are, the better it will be!* I’ll be ordering the prize at the same time that I place my order, and at that time I will reveal what it is. Sound good??? Great! The deadline for this giveaway is 11:59PM PST (California) time on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, and I will most likely be placing my order on the 26th or 27th.

Pretty please? I promise I’ll be good!

Yesterday I put together a cute but simple outfit of neutrals and basics: a peach cami, white button down with rolled up sleeves, light khaki shorts and taupe oxfords; possibly my first mix of softer neutrals since starting this blog. I tend to gravitate towards darker colors, so switching it up to the lighter side felt refreshing, almost invigorating. Probably would have felt better if it hadn’t been 7:00 at night when I finally decided to get dressed! Of course, it didn’t help that I slept until 5:00 in the evening. I wanted to take pictures, because it was ever so cute, but Travis fell asleep while I was reading downstairs, so unfortunately I didn’t get any last night… However, I’m thinking I’ll remix the outfit a bit for today, and I am definitely getting pictures today. I’m going outside today!

I finally decided that my body’s schedule is too far out of whack, so last night I stayed up all night so I can go to sleep early tonight. Kinda tired, but I’m sure it will be worth it. I love nighttime, but it’s summer and I’m sick of wasting it asleep. Hopefully this week I’ll get my check from DaVinci so I can do a little vintage shopping and get something to organize my closet with. In the meantime, though, I am going to start getting up earlier – by noon every day, at the latest – going for walks, reading outside on the porch, etc. I could definitely use some sunshine.

Fashionable Find of the Week ::
So, today is Sunday, the start of a new week. I found a new blog last night, academichic, which features three women PhD candidates in the midwest and chronicles their struggles against the stereotypical style of academics. My favorite part about the blog – they’ve written a Fashion 101 course, separated into 15 modules, each focusing on different areas of basic style. The first four modules focus on colors and matching – thank the Goddess! – which I have been searching for forever. They even assign homework!!! From what I’ve read so far, the homework mostly consists of putting together outfits using the techniques described in the module. Yeah, I’m a nerd (hence, my title: fashion nerdom), but I plan to study all of the modules this week and ‘do the homework’. I’ll be sure to post my notes and my ‘homework’ daily. If anyone else decides to take this course with me (and you totally should!), you should definitely take some photos and send them to me! I’ll even feature them here on my blog (unless you don’t want me to!), just email them to me at nuttall.jennifer@gmail.com, along with your name and what you’re wearing (you know the drill: each item & where you got it, if you remember). If I get enough submissions, I might even make a giveaway out of it, so make sure you send your photos in! And don’t forget to leave me some comments so I know you’re participating and going to class, too 😉

I’d like to stop here and thank everyone who hopped on over here from Facebook. It means a lot to me that you would take the time to read my ramblings about my every day life and my fashion obsession. Thanks for putting up with me, guys 🙂

And thanks again to those who have been with me from the start! Your warmth and encouragement mean more to me than you know. I love your comments and your input! Please, always feel free to comment or send me a private email. I love hearing from all of you!!!

I’ll be back later tonight with outfit photos, as well as photos of my new surroundings from my Adventure Walk I’m planning to take this afternoon. Be sure to check out academichic’s Fashion 101 in the meantime, and let me know what you think in the comments!

having a fantabulous day

Having a fantastic day. Put together a ridiculously cute outfit, will post pictures later tonight for sure.

Fashionable Find of the Week ::
Found a new vintage store that I am madly in love with: LoveCharles. Their stuff is insanely cute, cheap and wonderful. There are a couple of pieces that I am for sure going to buy as soon as I have some money, like this blouse:

Lavender Blouse from LoveCharles

Lavender Blouse from LoveCharles Vintage

and this skirt:

Putumayo1980sVintageSkirt_LoveCharles

Putumayo 1980s Vintage Skirt from LoveCharles Vintage

I am especially in love with the blouse… Hopefully I will have my paycheck from that job I worked shortly before leaving Utah within the week. Today was their pay day, and I should have already called them, but I’ve been putting it off… I feel bad for quitting like that. I really hope they didn’t mail it out to my old address. That would seriously suck! I really need to get a forwarding address set up. Bad.

Got some other stuff to attend to right now, but I will be back with photos of my outfit later on. Hope you’re all having a fabulous day 🙂

The weekend was a flurry of activity getting ready for The Move. Spent all day and all night Saturday packing and cleaning (didn’t sleep at all), then Sunday was spent moving all of our furniture and stuff we weren’t taking into a storage shed. Sunday night and all day Monday we packed up everything we were taking, and we left Monday night about 9:30 mountain time for California! It was a VERY long drive, especially with two cats… we drove 60 the entire way because we were trying to make the most of our gas, so the trip took longer than Google maps said it would.

So now we’re in Cali! I’m really excited… we arrived about 8:00 am pacific time, unloaded about half of the car and then slept for a few hours. My days are all messed up now. It’s nearly 3:00 am but I’m feeling a little wired and don’t really want to go to bed. Plus I have a major case of the munchies, but eating right before bed is bad for digestion! I’m going to finish up this post, read my blogroll, then go to bed.

Speaking of other blogs, you should definitely check out the latest giveaway on Unravelled Threads. I’m pretty excited about it!

Tomorrow we’re going to finish unloading the car and get situated here, and I definitely intend to go out and explore our new town! Not really sure what’s here, but hopefully it will be warm enough that we can go walk around and find out. Google weather says 63 & cloudy… so maybe our adventure will have to wait for the weekend (lame sauce!), but either way, there will definitely be outfit photos tomorrow!

Now that I’m here in CA, at the start of a new life for myself and a fresh start for my marriage, I finally have some real time to think about, and devote myself to, my goals. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and my recent forays into the world of Fashion have awakened a new passion for me. Fashion, for me, is both a form of self expression and self exploration. Learning what I like and what I don’t has taught me a lot about myself and my personal sense of style, and trying out new trends and new pieces that I would normally never have even thought about has been an adventure. With this new start and the chance to reinvent myself, I plan to include lots more of those pieces… new ways to explore, express and create myself abound, and I’m excited to be able to take advantage of them without worrying about how the people I know will perceive me or react… Every day here is new, with new possibilities that are endless. The ocean and the LA Fashion District are only a couple of hours away, and I intend to visit both as often as possible.

One thing I know for certain is that I am going to go back to school and finish my degree in journalism, minoring in something having to do with fashion. My ultimate goal is to work for a fashion magazine like Glamour. I’ve always loved and respected the writing element of the Fashion world, and I have a unique perspective and some interesting ideas that could really add to it. That perspective and those ideas, along with my own style and sense of fashion, are things I hope to hone and explore more here on this blog.

slacking off

I want this: vintage Victorian cape/apron

So I’m waiting for T to get done with his game of LoL (League of Legends), then he’s promised to help me clean a bit and take some photos of my outfit. Yay! Honestly, I should have just started cleaning on my own, but if he’s slacking off I get to slack too right?

Honestly, I really don’t feel like doing much of anything today.

I was looking through my closet earlier, trying to decide what to wear today, and I noticed something – my wardrobe is seriously lacking in color. Just about everything I own is black, gray or white, with a few other colors (mostly dark & neutral) mixed in – it’s like the whole thing is done in gray scale! I am in dire need of some pieces with major color and patterns other than horizontal stripes. I’ve always known I had a propensity for black, but damn.

So, my next few purchases will be bright color and bold pattern oriented. I’m typically color shy, but right now I am craving the rainbow pretty desperately. The only black I will be buying for a while are the sheer black tights I want to go with my dress!

Tried doing something new with my hair today, but failed miserably. The left side was all wavy and messy and sexy and gorgeous, but the right side refused to cooperate. Even when I tried to fix it and just straighten it back out, it was being obstinate. It took some doing, and a lot of flat ironing, but I was able to get it straightened back out. I wish I could figure out how to make my hair wavy and sexy. I’ve never been very good with hair and make up.

Feeling pretty tired, especially considering how late I slept. Not really sure why I’m already falling asleep, but somehow I am.

Anyway. I need to go accomplish something now. And take some photos of my pretty outfit. So I’m gonna go for now, but I’ll be back with pictures 🙂
